With the four possible companions and the two selectable characters, this creates eight different paths and a hell of a lot of dialogue, though Atlus's sharp and clever translation suggests that doing each path can remain fresh and entertaining. He asks a battery of personal questions and conjures up for you a mystical, elemental companion based on your answers. Not only is he a bit of a fish out of water, with no experience to speak of, but he doesn't even have a weapon: he's stuck fending off slimes with his forging hammer. Both characters come across the same unnamed summoner. If you chose the guy, Cleru, you're a real loser. There are two characters too choose from at the beginning of the game, and if you were the girl, she already has a sword and is ready to go into the labyrinth underneath town to pick up weapon-creating materials. Well, okay, you know what happens next: the protagonist rushes over to the Big Event, the start of a series of tests determining who can become a Craftlord, member of an elite class of blacksmiths. The rest of you still reading are crazy optimists, hoping that a game that starts out this clichéd can only go up from here. And it does.
